if the strings are too high off the neck (the term for this on guitar is
"action"), it's probably easy to fix (at least it is w/ guitar...I'm not
entirely sure how a banjo is put together).  Just take it in to a music store
and I bet they can get you fixed up for not very much money, if it really bugs
you.
